Far Cry Comes Alive on Screen

FX has confirmed that the celebrated video-game franchise Far Cry is being adapted into a live-action television series by the creators of It’s Always Sunny and Alien: Earth. The show will take the form of an anthology, with each season offering a fresh storyline, new location and different cast — maintaining the spirit of the games' standalone narrative arcs.

The series is being developed jointly by Ubisoft and FX, with creative leadership from Noah Hawley — known for his work on Fargo and Alien: Earth — and Rob Mac, whose credits include It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Mythic Quest. Mac will also star in the inaugural season of the adaptation.

According to the producers, the decision to pursue an anthology format was deliberate. Hawley noted that Far Cry games are “variations on a theme” — each providing a unique narrative environment — and suggested the series format allows the show to explore shifting landscapes and character dynamics in a way that remains faithful to the game’s DNA. Mac described the opportunity as “a dream realised,” praising Ubisoft for entrusting the creative team with one of the most iconic properties in gaming.

Streaming arrangements confirm that the series will be available on Hulu in the United States and on Disney+ for international audiences, extending its reach to a global fanbase.

The decision to green-light a Far Cry adaptation follows an increasingly active period for Ubisoft in pushing its gaming catalog into television and film. Earlier experiments included the animated series Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix, and more recently collaborations such as the Splinter Cell: Deathwatch anime.

At this stage, creators have not publicly released detailed information about the plot, characters, or the specific game entries that may be adapted. It remains unclear whether the show will draw directly on existing game storylines — for instance from titles like Far Cry 6 — or chart entirely original narrative territory.

Given the flexibility of the anthology format, the show could traverse a wide array of settings drawn from Far Cry’s rich history — from tropical islands and war-torn regions to remote wildernesses — offering fresh stories each season. The involvement of experienced television veterans like Hawley and Mac suggests a production that seeks to balance high-stakes action with character-driven drama, potentially reshaping audience expectations for what a video game adaptation can achieve.
