Saudi Arabia secures flagship AERO airshow

Saudi Arabia is set to stage a new international general aviation exhibition in Riyadh this November, as Messe Frankfurt Saudi Arabia and the Saudi Aviation Club unveil AERO Middle East x Sand & Fun 2026, positioning the Kingdom at the forefront of a rapidly expanding regional aviation market.

Organisers say the five-day event, scheduled for November 24–28 at Thumamah Airport in Riyadh, will mark the Middle East debut of the globally recognised AERO brand, long associated with the AERO Friedrichshafen show in Germany. They describe it as the largest dedicated general aviation platform in the region, bringing together aircraft manufacturers, business aviation operators, suppliers, regulators and investors.

The exhibition is being delivered in partnership with the Saudi Aviation Club, the official general aviation body founded by Prince Sultan bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. The club operates under the umbrella of the General Authority of Civil Aviation, which regulates the Kingdom’s civil aviation sector. That institutional backing is expected to lend regulatory alignment and credibility to the event at a time when Saudi Arabia is accelerating its aviation ambitions under Vision 2030.

Messe Frankfurt, one of the world’s largest trade fair organisers, has steadily expanded its footprint in the Gulf, tapping into growing demand for sector-specific exhibitions. By transplanting the AERO brand to Riyadh, the organiser is seeking to connect established European and North American general aviation players with a Middle Eastern market undergoing structural change.

Saudi Arabia has committed billions of dollars to aviation infrastructure and fleet expansion. Plans announced in recent years include the development of King Salman International Airport in Riyadh and the launch of Riyadh Air, a new national carrier. While much of the focus has centred on commercial aviation, authorities have also signalled support for business aviation, private flying and advanced air mobility.

General aviation, which encompasses private aircraft, flight training, maintenance services and recreational flying, has historically been less developed in the region compared with commercial air transport. However, industry data indicate rising demand for charter services and corporate jets across the Gulf, driven by economic diversification, tourism growth and the emergence of new industrial zones.

Thumamah Airport, the chosen venue for the show, serves as a hub for general aviation activities in Riyadh. By hosting aircraft displays, static exhibitions and flight demonstrations on site, organisers aim to create an immersive platform similar to established global airshows, while retaining a focus on smaller aircraft and emerging mobility technologies rather than large commercial jets.

The inclusion of “Sand & Fun” in the event title reflects an effort to blend professional industry engagement with public-facing aviation experiences. The Saudi Aviation Club has previously organised Sand & Fun events to promote recreational aviation, air sports and community participation. Integrating this concept with the AERO brand signals an attempt to broaden the appeal beyond trade visitors to enthusiasts, families and aspiring pilots.

Officials associated with the launch have emphasised the strategic timing. The Kingdom is working to increase the number of licensed pilots, expand maintenance, repair and overhaul capabilities, and encourage local aerospace manufacturing. An international exhibition focused on general aviation could support those objectives by facilitating technology transfer, training partnerships and investment discussions.

Advanced air mobility, including electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft and unmanned systems, is also expected to feature prominently. Across Europe and North America, AERO-branded events have increasingly showcased sustainable propulsion systems and digital cockpit technologies. Bringing these themes to Riyadh aligns with Saudi Arabia’s broader sustainability agenda and interest in smart mobility solutions.

The Middle East already hosts high-profile aerospace gatherings, notably the Dubai Airshow and Bahrain International Airshow, which concentrate heavily on commercial aviation and defence. By contrast, AERO Middle East x Sand & Fun 2026 is being positioned as a specialised platform dedicated to general and business aviation, a segment that industry analysts say offers strong margins and growth potential.

Regional business jet activity has shown resilience despite global economic fluctuations, according to industry trackers. Operators cite increased cross-border corporate travel, high-net-worth mobility and demand for flexible travel options. As Gulf economies pursue diversification into technology, finance and entertainment, business aviation is viewed as an enabler of investment flows.

For Messe Frankfurt, the partnership provides a gateway into a market that is actively courting international events. The company’s portfolio spans automotive, consumer goods and industrial exhibitions, and its decision to launch AERO in Saudi Arabia underscores confidence in the Kingdom’s event infrastructure and regulatory environment.

For the Saudi Aviation Club and the General Authority of Civil Aviation, the event offers a platform to demonstrate regulatory reform and sector readiness. GACA has introduced initiatives aimed at streamlining licensing, enhancing safety oversight and encouraging private sector participation. Hosting a globally recognised aviation brand could serve as a signal to international stakeholders that the market is open and structured.
