Smart-Pipeline Giant Chooses Bahrain as Global Hub

Switzerland-headquartered engineering firm Purapipe has announced a US$60 million investment to build a global testing and assembly centre in the Kingdom of Bahrain. The site, located at the Bahrain International Investment Park, will house mobile pipe production units and serve as a strategic hub for the company’s smart-pipeline systems across the Gulf Cooperation Council region and Europe.

Chairman Nick Cochrane-Dyet described the decision as guided by Bahrain’s "ideal environment for innovation and regional integration", citing its strategic location and industrial base. The move positions Purapipe at the forefront of sustainable infrastructure solutions, leveraging automation and mobile manufacturing to reduce transport costs, material waste and carbon emissions.

The facility is designed to advance Purapipe’s patented digital platforms and production model, enabling pipelines to be assembled directly at project sites rather than transported long distances. Purapipe states that its solution accelerates deployment and enhances resilience in water and energy infrastructure systems. The Bahrain location will also provide technical validation, pilot operations and two-way knowledge exchanges with regional utilities. One such pilot cited is a partnership with Gas Networks Ireland, highlighting the company’s ambitions beyond the Gulf.

Bahrain’s government-backed investment promotion arm Bahrain Economic Development Board facilitated the announcement at the investment forum Gateway Gulf 2025 held in Manama. The forum showcased the island nation’s push to attract advanced manufacturing, clean-technology and logistics investment. Officials emphasised that Purapipe’s hub aligns with Bahrain’s Vision 2030 strategy to develop a diversified and innovation-driven economy.

From a market perspective, Purapipe’s timing reflects growing interest in smart-infrastructure investment. Public utilities and governments are under pressure to upgrade ageing water- and gas- networks, improve asset management and meet sustainability targets. Analysts note that mobile production units offer operational flexibility and cost advantages, particularly in remote or large-scale deployment environments. By locating in Bahrain, Purapipe gains proximity to clients in the GCC while maintaining access to European markets through its existing footprint in the United Arab Emirates and beyond.
