Campus radio amplifies UAE military ethos

Abu Dhabi has added a new digital voice to its military education ecosystem with the launch of Zayed Military University’s radio station, a campus-based platform designed to blend national messaging, media training and cadet development as the UAE marks the Golden Jubilee of Armed Forces unification.

Lt. General Staff Mike Hindmarsh, Commandant of Zayed Military University, launched the station under the slogan “Our Voice, Our Strength”, positioning it as more than a communications outlet. The initiative is intended to support a broader institutional effort to use digital audio media as a tool for strengthening national identity, improving cadets’ communication skills and deepening awareness of the UAE’s military and civic values.

The timing gives the project symbolic weight. The UAE Armed Forces were unified on 6 May 1976 under one command and one flag, a decision that remains central to the federation’s nation-building narrative. The 50th anniversary has provided defence and education institutions with an opportunity to reflect on the evolution of the Armed Forces from separate local structures into a unified force with modern training, technology and doctrine.

Zayed Military University’s new station is being framed as part of that continuity. It is expected to produce national podcasts and audio programmes highlighting the UAE’s history, achievements and public issues, while allowing cadets to take part in preparing and presenting content. The platform will operate through the university’s official website and digital channels, extending its reach beyond the campus.

Hindmarsh said the project fits into a strategic vision aimed at using digital audio media to reinforce national identity and enhance cadet awareness. He described the station as a platform for preparing a generation capable of expressing itself and conveying the nation’s message with confidence and competence. He also stressed that the initiative goes beyond conventional broadcasting by combining military education with modern media practice.

That approach reflects a wider shift in military education, where leadership training increasingly includes public communication, information literacy and the ability to operate in a fast-moving media environment. Modern armed forces are no longer judged only by operational readiness and technology; their credibility also depends on how effectively they explain their role, preserve institutional memory and engage society.

The university has presented the radio station as an integrated media platform fitted with advanced technical standards. Its design identity draws on the symbolism of the campus, the nation and sound waves, combining heritage themes with a contemporary digital format. Content will be supervised by the Community Communications Department, giving cadets structured exposure to editorial planning, audio production and presentation.

Zayed Military University occupies a distinctive place in the UAE’s higher education and defence architecture. Founded by the Ministry of Defence, it was created to bring together academic instruction and military training in a unified setting. Its model aims to develop future officers and security-sector professionals with discipline, technical knowledge, leadership skills and a clear understanding of national values.

The university’s programmes have been shaped by partnerships with established academic institutions, including collaborations designed to strengthen education and research in defence-related fields. The graduation of its first cohorts has already positioned it as an important part of the UAE’s effort to professionalise military education and connect it more closely with the country’s long-term knowledge economy.

The radio station adds a cultural and communications dimension to that mission. Cadets will be able to gain practical experience in producing programmes that address national history, institutional values and issues of public importance. Such skills are especially relevant at a time when digital platforms have become central to public engagement, strategic communication and the contest over narratives.

The launch also comes as the UAE continues to invest heavily in defence modernisation, advanced technologies and human capital. Over the past five decades, the Armed Forces have expanded their capabilities through training reform, international partnerships and the development of domestic defence industries. The country’s military institutions have also placed growing emphasis on education, research, cyber readiness and technology-driven operational planning.

The station’s slogan, “Our Voice, Our Strength”, captures the emphasis on authenticity and institutional confidence. Hindmarsh said the strength of the message stems from its authenticity and that national media is a key pillar in building awareness. The phrase also points to the role of cadets as future communicators of institutional values, not only as military professionals.
