UAE, Hungary Expand Trade and Investment Momentum

Dr Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of Foreign Trade of the UAE, arrived in Budapest on 8 September for meetings with Hungarian counterparts, notably Péter Szijjártó and Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony, to fortify economic and private sector bonds. His discussions underscored a sharp upswing in non-oil trade, which reached US $793.7 million in 2024 and surpassed US $434.2 million in the first half of 2025, marking a 29.4 percent year-on-year rise, while laying groundwork for expanded collaboration across vital sectors.

Al Zeyoudi framed Hungary not merely as a trading partner but as “a gateway to Europe’s future growth,” pinpointing energy, digitalisation, infrastructure, agriculture, electronics, aerospace, pharmaceuticals, and automotive among promising sectors. He described the ongoing Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement negotiations as transformative, lowering barriers and unlocking fresh opportunities across services and investment.

The minister also addressed public concerns regarding the Eagle Hills urban development project in Budapest, pledging clarity, transparency, and a sustained long-term commitment. He emphasised that more than 35–40 percent of the project will be dedicated to green space, and confirmed collaboration with local partners to ensure alignment with Hungarian expectations.

This mission builds on a July visit by the UAE President, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, during which both nations signed numerous memoranda covering AI, green energy, food and agriculture, youth and family policy, government modernisation, energy storage, and defence cooperation. Key private-sector actors such as Mubadala, EDGE Group, Eagle Hills, and representatives of both governments participated.

Economic engagement systems established in 2024 remain central, notably the Economic Cooperation Agreement and the UAE-Hungary Business Council, underpinned by a joint committee that oversees sector-wide collaboration from tourism and logistics to real estate, agriculture, space, and beyond.

Hungarian officials reiterate that the country hosts 14 agreements with the UAE, spanning energy, agriculture, defence, telecommunications, and new technologies. Among these is an MoU between 4iG and Mubadala for digital infrastructure, including data centres and submarine cable projects, alongside partnerships between 4iG’s defence arm and EDGE on drones and air-defence systems.
