The series is shaped under the creative leadership of Phoebe Waller-Bridge—best known for Fleabag—who will serve as creator, writer, executive producer, and co-showrunner. Chad Hodge will join her as co-showrunner and executive producer, while Jonathan van Tulleken will direct and hold executive production responsibilities.
Turner, acknowledging the legacy of her predecessors Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander, said she is “thrilled beyond measure” to take on the iconic role and intends to give it her all. She praised the team’s leadership under Waller-Bridge, noting, “we are all in very safe hands”.
Waller-Bridge, speaking of her excitement, remarked that it is rare to have the chance to make a project of this scale featuring a character she admired growing up. She described the collective spirit of the team as “wildly passionate,” embracing Croft’s defining traits of bravery, humour, and boldness.
The project forms part of Amazon’s expanding slate of video-game adaptations, alongside its Fallout series heading into Season 2 in December, a God of War series developed by Ronald D. Moore, and a second season of the Secret Level anthology. The development reflects Amazon’s commitment to building a broader “Tomb Raider” universe across media, in collaboration with Crystal Dynamics and Story Kitchen.
The Tomb Raider franchise holds a pivotal place in gaming culture, originating in 1996 and raising the bar for female protagonists in video games. Its screen adaptations have seen varied fortunes, with Jolie’s early-2000s films and Vikander’s 2018 reboot receiving mixed reviews and average box-office returns — notably with Vikander’s film grossing around $274 million globally.
Multiple writers’ rooms and high development costs previously stalled the live-action adaptation, with some outlets reporting the series was “dead” as of April 2025. The new announcement thus signals a considerable resurgence in Amazon’s strategy for the project.
Meanwhile, the animated Netflix series Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft continues to unfold on a separate track. It premiered in October 2024 with Hayley Atwell voicing Croft and has been renewed for a second and final season due to debut in December 2025.
