flydubai has grown its network to more than 125 destinations across 56 countries as the Dubai carrier adds routes and frequencies ahead of the winter travel season.The airline is operating an average of about 2,200 flights a week and has restored service across most of its network, while adding capacity in markets where demand has strengthened. Its latest expansion includes additional flying to Southeast Asia, new links to Libya and Syria, and a further Nepal route scheduled to begin this month.
Bangkok has become one of the fastest-growing points in the network. flydubai began daily flights from Dubai International to Don Mueang International Airport on July 1 and added a second daily service from July 18 after demand exceeded initial expectations. The carrier had earlier planned double-daily operations from September 15, and its broader Thailand schedule now includes Krabi alongside Bangkok.
The Bangkok route gives flydubai a second destination in Thailand and complements its Southeast Asian services to Langkawi and Penang in Malaysia. The carrier has said the additional frequencies are intended to provide greater flexibility for business and leisure passengers while strengthening connections through Dubai.
Network growth has also continued in the Middle East and Africa. flydubai resumed daily non-stop flights to Aleppo on July 20, returning to the northern Syrian city after an absence of nearly 14 years. Aleppo became its second destination in Syria alongside Damascus, where the airline operates three daily flights.
The carrier also began three weekly services to Benghazi in June, becoming the first UAE airline to operate direct flights between Dubai and the eastern Libyan city. The addition took its African network to 13 destinations across nine countries at the time of launch and gave travellers from Benghazi access to onward connections through Dubai.
Further expansion is due on September 23, when flydubai is scheduled to start direct flights to Pokhara. The Nepal service will give the airline a second destination in the country after Kathmandu and extend its South Asian reach during the winter travel period.
The airline’s network now spans Africa, Central Asia, the Caucasus, Central and Southeast Europe, the Gulf and wider Middle East, South Asia and Southeast Asia. It says more than 100 routes in its network either lacked direct air links to Dubai before its entry or were not served from Dubai by a UAE national carrier.
flydubai’s growth has been supported by a fleet of 98 Boeing 737 aircraft. The fleet comprises 25 Boeing 737-800s, 69 Boeing 737 MAX 8s and four Boeing 737 MAX 9s, according to the airline. The single-aircraft-family model allows the carrier to deploy capacity across short- and medium-haul markets while maintaining a common operating platform.
The airline’s commercial strategy also relies heavily on its codeshare partnership with Emirates. Flights on several new routes, including Aleppo, Benghazi and Bangkok, are offered within the partnership, allowing passengers to book connecting itineraries on a single ticket and have baggage checked through to their final destination.
Chief executive Ghaith Al Ghaith has repeatedly said flydubai’s expansion is centred on opening underserved markets and supporting Dubai’s role as an international aviation hub. Announcing the Aleppo resumption, he said creating direct links to markets with limited connectivity remained a core part of the airline’s network strategy.
Traffic growth has accompanied the route expansion. flydubai says it has carried more than 137 million passengers since beginning operations in 2009, while its current footprint extends well beyond the regional network with which it started.
Seasonal flying has also broadened the airline’s schedule during the summer, with services to destinations including Antalya, Batumi, Dubrovnik, Mykonos, Santorini and Trabzon. Some of those routes are designed around peak leisure demand, while permanent additions such as Bangkok, Benghazi and Aleppo are being incorporated into the wider year-round network.
