Emirates Skywards has launched a rail-booking platform allowing members to redeem Miles for journeys to more than 12,000 destinations across Europe, extending the loyalty programme beyond air travel and airport-related services. The new Skywards Rail platform covers more than 40 train operators in 12 European countries. Members can pay entirely with Skywards Miles or use a combination of Cash + Miles, giving travellers greater flexibility when arranging domestic, cross-border and high-speed rail journeys.
Bookings can be made through the dedicated platform on desktop computers and mobile devices. Travellers can search timetables, compare ticket types, select travel classes and complete purchases in five languages. Electronic tickets are delivered by email, while members may also book journeys for relatives and friends.
The service includes major operators such as Eurostar, Deutsche Bahn, SNCF, Trenitalia, Renfe and Austria’s ÖBB. It also covers TGV services and a range of UK operators, including Heathrow Express, Gatwick Express, Thameslink, Great Western Railway and ScotRail.
Indicative redemption levels start at 4,100 Skywards Miles for travel between Berlin and Frankfurt. Heathrow Express tickets begin at 4,700 Miles, while Barcelona-to-Madrid journeys start at 5,400 Miles. Rome-to-Milan travel is available from 8,100 Miles, and London-to-Paris Eurostar journeys start at 9,400 Miles.
Actual redemption requirements may vary according to the travel date, ticket availability, booking class and the fare conditions imposed by individual operators. Train tickets across Europe can carry different rules covering refunds, exchanges, identification requirements and validity, requiring members to review the terms before completing a booking.
Dr Nejib Ben Khedher, divisional senior vice-president of Emirates Skywards, said members were seeking more flexible ways to use their Miles. He said Skywards Rail would allow travellers to build connected journeys between cities, extend trips after arriving on Emirates or flydubai flights and reach places outside the airlines’ direct networks.
The initiative marks another step in the transformation of airline loyalty schemes into wider travel and lifestyle platforms. Frequent-flyer programmes were traditionally designed around free flights, cabin upgrades and airport benefits. Airlines are increasingly adding hotels, retail purchases, entertainment, ground transport and everyday spending options to encourage members to remain active between flights.
Rail access is particularly relevant in Europe, where extensive high-speed and intercity networks link major aviation gateways with regional centres. Travellers arriving at airports including London Heathrow, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Frankfurt, Madrid, Barcelona, Rome and Milan can use trains to reach city centres or continue to destinations that may not be served efficiently by air.
The platform also broadens the value of smaller Miles balances. Flight rewards can require substantial balances and may be limited by seat availability, while shorter train journeys offer members a way to redeem fewer Miles. This may help reduce the number of inactive balances and strengthen engagement among customers who fly less frequently.
Emirates Skywards, the joint loyalty programme of Emirates and flydubai, has more than 39 million members across 190 countries. More than 78,000 people join each week, underlining the commercial importance of expanding redemption choices as the membership base grows.
The programme was launched in 2000 and has developed partnerships across aviation, hospitality, banking, retail, car rental and entertainment. Members earn Miles through Emirates and flydubai flights, partner airlines, payment cards and participating lifestyle businesses, while redemption choices include tickets, upgrades and other travel services.
Emirates already maintains air-and-rail arrangements with operators in several European markets, including Trenitalia, Renfe, ÖBB and Sweden’s SJ. Those partnerships are designed mainly to connect flight itineraries with onward train services, while Skywards Rail focuses on providing a dedicated channel for loyalty redemptions across a broader range of operators and routes.
The launch reflects stronger competition among global loyalty programmes to improve the usefulness of reward currencies. Members increasingly assess programmes not only by how quickly they earn points but also by the availability, transparency and convenience of redemptions.
