South Korea and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) solidified their economic and political ties on Wednesday with the signing of a comprehensive trade agreement. The deal, finalized during a summit between South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, promises significant reductions in import duties between the two nations.
This economic pact, known as a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), is expected to pave the way for a surge in bilateral trade. By eliminating or significantly lowering tariffs on over 90% of imports, the agreement will make South Korean and Emirati goods cheaper and more accessible to consumers in both countries. South Korean officials anticipate a particular boost in crude oil imports from the UAE, a key energy supplier for South Korea.
The trade deal extends beyond just tariffs. The agreement also lays the groundwork for enhanced cooperation in areas like investment, energy, and defense. South Korea has identified the UAE as a strategic partner for its ambitions to become a leading global defense exporter, and the CEPA is likely to facilitate further collaboration in this sector. The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) also signed a letter of intent with a South Korean company to construct a fleet of liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, a deal valued at approximately $1. 5 billion.
This economic pact comes at a time when both South Korea and the UAE are seeking to expand their economic influence.
