Dubai Amps Up Electric Vehicle Infrastructure in Landmark Deal

Dubai is taking a significant step towards becoming a hub for sustainable transportation. The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) and Parkin, Dubai's largest operator of public parking facilities, have joined forces to expand the emirate's electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. This collaboration will see the installation of more "EV Green Charger" stations at strategic locations managed by Parkin.

The initiative aligns with Dubai's ambitious goals for clean energy and green mobility. The Dubai Green Mobility Strategy 2030 aims to have 30% of all journeys within the city conducted by sustainable modes of transport, including EVs. DEWA's EV Green Charger program is a key driver of this strategy, providing convenient and accessible charging options for electric vehicle owners.

"This partnership with Parkin underscores our commitment to promoting environmentally friendly EVs and reducing carbon emissions in the transport sector, " said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of DEWA. He highlighted the program's success, citing Dubai's burgeoning EV market with over 30, 000 electric vehicles registered by April 2024. The DEWA EV Green Charger initiative has also seen a surge in participation, with more than 15, 000 customers enrolled by the end of March 2024.

The expansion of charging stations at Parkin locations will significantly enhance the convenience for EV drivers in Dubai. Parkin operates parking facilities in various key areas across the city, ensuring easy access to charging points during errands, commutes, or leisure activities. This strategic placement will address a major concern for EV users, known as "range anxiety" – the fear of running out of power before reaching a charging station.

Ahmed Bahrozyan, Chairman of Parkin's Board of Directors, acknowledged the importance of the collaboration. "Given the time it takes to recharge electric vehicles, our parking facilities will play a key role in supporting the global transition to EVs, " he said. He emphasized that Parkin's involvement reflects the company's commitment to sustainability and aligns with Dubai's vision for a greener future.

The DEWA-Parkin partnership is a win-win for Dubai. It will encourage residents to adopt electric vehicles, contributing to cleaner air and a more sustainable urban environment. Additionally, it will make Dubai a more attractive destination for eco-conscious tourists and businesses. This initiative is a significant milestone in Dubai's journey towards becoming a global leader in sustainable transportation.
