Austrians travelled like never before in 2023, according to a report by Statistics Austria. The report revealed that a record-breaking 27. 01 million holiday trips were taken by residents in the year, marking a significant increase of more than a quarter compared to 2019. This surge in travel comes after a period of restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting a strong rebound in the Austrian tourism industry.
The report further indicated that nearly three-quarters (73%) of Austrians aged 15 and over embarked on at least one overnight trip in 2023. This placed Austria among the top quartile of European countries with the highest travel rates, following countries like Norway (89%), Switzerland (87%), and the Netherlands (83%). Interestingly, the average Austrian traveler took an impressive five trips throughout the year, showcasing a desire to make up for lost travel opportunities.
While the report included both domestic and international trips, a significant portion of Austrians opted to venture abroad. Statistics Austria noted that over half of the total holiday trips were foreign excursions, with Italy being the most popular destination.
