Veteran diplomat Mohamed Abushahab has taken the helm as the United Arab Emirates' Permanent Representative to the United Nations. Abushahab formally assumed his role on April 16th after presenting his credentials to UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

This appointment marks a new chapter for Abushahab, who brings a wealth of experience to the position. He previously served as the UAE's Deputy Permanent Representative at the UN since 2021. Prior to that, he held the prestigious post of Ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg, and the European Union from 2017 to 2021. Abushahab's extensive diplomatic career also includes various leadership roles within the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Secretary-General Guterres welcomed Abushahab to his new role, highlighting the UAE's significant contributions to the UN. The discussion between the two leaders reportedly focused on strengthening cooperation between the UAE and the UN, particularly in light of rising tensions in the Middle East.

Abushahab, following the meeting, emphasized the critical role the UN plays in tackling the complex global challenges of today. He expressed his commitment to continuing the UAE's efforts in fostering international cooperation and building upon the achievements made during its recent tenure on the UN Security Council and its upcoming hosting of COP28, the UN Climate Change Conference, in Dubai later this year.

Abushahab's background in climate change negotiations is seen as a valuable asset, aligning with the UAE's growing focus on sustainability and clean energy initiatives. His experience in navigating the diplomatic landscape of Europe is also expected to contribute to the UAE's evolving relationship with the international community.

The UAE's appointment of Abushahab is a strategic move, signaling the country's continued commitment to playing an active role on the global stage. Abushahab's extensive diplomatic experience and proven leadership qualities position him well to represent the UAE's interests and contribute to the UN's mission of promoting peace and security.
