Dubai-based Emirates Flight Catering has successfully acquired Bustanica, formerly known as Emirates Crop One, and its consumer brand Bustanica, marking a milestone as the world’s largest indoor vertical farm comes under complete UAE ownership.
The acquisition aligns with the UAE's commitment to bolster food and water security, reinforcing its agricultural capabilities. Emirates Bustanica, located near Al Maktoum International Airport at Dubai World Central, encompasses a sprawling 330,000 square feet facility capable of cultivating over 1 million kilograms of premium leafy greens annually. Notably, this output is achieved with a remarkable 95% reduction in water usage compared to traditional agriculture methods.
Bustanica, the brand under which the produce operates, has made its mark in major UAE retailers such as Spinney’s, Waitrose, Carrefour, and Choithrams. Additionally, Emirates airlines, including its flagship carrier, incorporate Bustanica's farm-fresh produce into salads and meals for passengers.
Since its inception in July 2022, Bustanica has gained prominence in UAE households, offering a diverse array of lettuce, spinach, parsley, and kale, among other greens. The produce is cultivated without the use of pesticides or herbicides, ensuring it is entirely clean, fresh, and nutrient-rich. Bustanica's unique selling proposition lies in its ability to be consumed straight from the box, with a strong emphasis on avoiding contamination even from tap water.
Underpinning Bustanica's operations is advanced technology, including machine learning, artificial intelligence, and patented technologies. The farm is managed by a specialized in-house team comprising agronomy experts, engineers, horticulturists, and plant scientists.
Recently, Emirates Bustanica earned recognition as a preferred produce supplier for COP28, underscoring its dedication to sustainability and environmental responsibility. The strategic acquisition by Emirates Flight Catering positions Bustanica to harness local expertise and cutting-edge technology to meet the burgeoning market demands.
