The deployment strengthens Hurricane Electric’s capacity in one of Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing digital markets as enterprises increase their use of cloud computing, artificial intelligence, financial technology and data-intensive online services. The new infrastructure is designed to provide lower-latency connectivity while improving traffic resilience and routing options for organisations operating in and around the Philippine capital.
Located at 2275 Chino Roces Avenue in Makati, the facility sits within one of Metro Manila’s principal commercial districts. Customers can connect to Hurricane Electric through 1 Gigabit Ethernet, 10 Gigabit Ethernet and 100 Gigabit Ethernet ports, allowing companies with different bandwidth requirements to scale their network capacity without changing backbone providers.
The Makati connection becomes Hurricane Electric’s third point of presence in the Philippines. Its existing locations include PLDT VITRO Makati 1 and PLDT Diliman in Quezon City. The expanded footprint provides additional routing diversity for customers seeking to move traffic between Philippine networks, international exchanges and cloud infrastructure outside the country.
Hurricane Electric said the additional connection should improve fault tolerance, load balancing and congestion management. Those functions have become increasingly important as corporate systems shift towards applications that require continuous network availability, including artificial intelligence platforms, video services, financial transactions and distributed cloud workloads.
The Fremont, California-based company operates one of the world’s largest internet backbones and maintains direct connections with more than 10,500 networks. Its infrastructure supports more than 40,000 Border Gateway Protocol sessions and connects with more than 320 major internet exchange points worldwide. The company operates extensive 100G network paths across North America, Europe, Asia, Australia and other international markets.
For customers inside STT Makati, the deployment reduces the need to reach Hurricane Electric through an intermediary network before entering its backbone. Direct network connections can cut the number of routing hops involved in carrying data, while giving operators more control over international traffic flows. The arrangement can also provide additional redundancy where businesses maintain links with several carriers.
The expansion comes as Metro Manila develops into a larger regional centre for data centres and interconnection services. Growing demand from cloud providers, digital commerce companies and financial institutions is encouraging operators to increase computing capacity while improving connectivity between facilities. AI workloads are adding another layer of pressure because large-scale training and inference systems can require substantially higher power density, network capacity and data-transfer performance than traditional enterprise applications.
ST Telemedia Global Data Centres has nine data-centre sites operating, under development or held for further development in the Philippines, representing more than 146 megawatts of IT load. Its local strategy includes colocation, connectivity and support services intended for enterprise, multi-cloud and high-performance computing deployments.
The company has also been expanding infrastructure designed for AI workloads. It has highlighted liquid cooling, higher-density computing and stronger network connectivity as increasingly important requirements as organisations move artificial intelligence projects from experimentation towards production environments.
Hurricane Electric’s move also reflects a broader shift among global backbone providers towards placing infrastructure closer to enterprise customers and regional data centres. Rather than sending traffic through distant international hubs, network operators can establish local interconnection points that shorten routing paths and provide alternative routes when another link becomes congested or unavailable.
Metro Manila’s importance is reinforced by its concentration of financial institutions, multinational companies, telecommunications operators and digital-service businesses. Makati in particular remains a major corporate centre, making data-centre locations there attractive to organisations requiring connections between office infrastructure, cloud environments and international networks.
