The scholars secured residency and fellowship positions for the 2026-2027 academic year through the Academic Mentorship Programme at Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences. Their specialties include neurology, urology, internal medicine, behavioural neurology and paediatric emergency medicine.
Officials said the doctors would spend between three and five years learning specialist medicine abroad before returning with deeper clinical knowledge, international board credentials and the ability to pronounce complicated neurological conditions without consulting a search engine.
The seven form the third cohort supported by the initiative, which has helped more than 30 scholars enter international training programmes since its launch three years ago. The scheme has doubled the number of participating doctors training in North America, apparently confirming that the quickest route to building local expertise remains a journey of roughly 11,000 kilometres.
Dubai Health plans to support about 100 Emirati scholars over the programme’s 10-year lifespan. The goal is to develop a medical workforce capable of meeting the emirate’s evolving healthcare needs, including the growing requirement for specialists who can treat patients, lead research and remain calm when presented with a hospital printer that has stopped working.
The candidates were selected through an evaluation of academic performance, research accomplishments, training experience and the relevance of their chosen specialties to workforce requirements. This prevented places from being allocated through less reliable methods such as drawing names from a surgical cap or asking applicants to diagnose a fictional television patient.
Dr Hanan Al Suwaidi, Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Chief Academic Officer of Dubai Health and Provost of MBRU, said the programme creates pathways for Emirati medical professionals to pursue advanced training at major academic and healthcare institutions worldwide.
The announcement also reflects Dubai Health’s attempt to strengthen the connection between clinical care, education and research. Under the integrated academic health system, doctors are expected not merely to treat illness but also to investigate it, publish findings about it and eventually attend a conference where someone explains those findings through an unreadable PowerPoint chart.
Programme administrators said scholars would receive support throughout their residency and fellowship journeys. That assistance will include preparation for advanced training, professional development and work towards board certification in the United States and Canada.
It was not immediately clear whether the support package includes counselling for doctors encountering North American hospital coffee, snow-covered car parks or the phrase “insurance pre-authorisation” for the first time.
The specialties chosen for the cohort reflect areas regarded as important to future workforce planning. Neurology deals with disorders of the brain and nervous system, urology covers the urinary tract and male reproductive system, while internal medicine handles a broad range of adult diseases that patients frequently describe as “just a little weakness”.
Behavioural neurology focuses on the relationship between brain function, cognition and behaviour. Paediatric emergency medicine, meanwhile, requires doctors to diagnose sick children while simultaneously reassuring distressed parents, answering six questions per second and determining whether a swallowed plastic object is medically urgent or merely part of childhood.
Dubai has expanded investment in medical education as population growth, longer life expectancy and rising demand for specialised treatment reshape healthcare requirements. The city’s academic health model is designed to produce professionals who can combine patient care with teaching and scientific investigation, replacing the outdated belief that doctors naturally have enough free time for all three.
International residency positions are highly competitive and typically require candidates to demonstrate strong academic records, clinical experience, research ability and performance in licensing examinations. Successful applicants must also adapt to different hospital systems, regulatory standards and definitions of what constitutes an acceptable number of forms before examining a patient.
Officials expect scholars to return with skills that can strengthen clinical services, academic programmes and research capacity across Dubai. The arrangement resembles an elaborate medical exchange in which the emirate sends promising doctors abroad and later receives specialists who know the difference between five nearly identical brain scans.
