Zayed University and the Zayed Education Foundation have launched a partnership to align scholarships, research, student support and leadership development with the UAE’s human-capital agenda.The cooperation is designed around five strategic domains, placing student success and research and innovation at the centre of a wider framework that also covers leadership development, advanced study opportunities and community-facing programmes. The agreement gives both institutions a platform to expand joint initiatives for learners, faculty and researchers while linking academic work more closely to national priorities.
The partnership comes as the foundation accelerates its education and leadership mandate through programmes intended to support high-potential Emirati and Arab youth. Its flagship Ruwwad Zayed programme has been positioned as a merit-based graduate scholarship and leadership initiative, offering full academic funding, mentoring, research placements and structured leadership development for selected scholars pursuing master’s degrees in priority fields.
Zayed University’s inclusion in the foundation’s wider university network gives the Abu Dhabi and Dubai-based institution a stronger channel to connect its students with scholarship-backed postgraduate pathways and applied research opportunities. The university, established in 1998 and named after the UAE’s Founding Father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, has been sharpening its focus on interdisciplinary learning, employability, innovation and student support through initiatives that expose learners to real-world challenges from government, business and social-sector partners.
The new partnership is expected to deepen that agenda by creating structured opportunities for students to receive academic guidance, leadership training and access to research-linked activities. For faculty, it opens the prospect of collaboration on research chairs, fellowships, grants and innovation programmes that can support work in sectors aligned with the UAE’s long-term development plans.
The Zayed Education Foundation has made research and innovation a core part of its mission, with plans to attract leading researchers to national universities, support graduate and postgraduate fellows, and provide grants for researchers, innovators and small businesses working on long-term product development and intellectual property creation. Its model links funding with ecosystem support, including market access, relocation assistance and strategic partnerships.
The university’s Center for Student Success already provides academic advising, transition support, development programmes and access to campus and community resources. The new cooperation is likely to build on those functions by connecting student-support mechanisms with scholarship pathways and leadership formation, a combination increasingly seen across the higher education sector as central to improving retention, employability and graduate outcomes.
The partnership also reflects a wider shift in the UAE’s higher education landscape, where universities are being encouraged to work more closely with foundations, industry and public-sector entities to develop talent for knowledge-economy sectors. Scholarship programmes are no longer being framed only as financial aid. They are increasingly tied to mentoring, research exposure, values-based leadership, entrepreneurship and service to society.
Zayed University has already tested such models through its Partner Challenge programme, under which students work with organisations on practical problems from early in their degree journey. Participating companies have included major firms and public institutions, giving students exposure to workplace expectations, problem-solving methods and professional networks before graduation. The foundation partnership adds a philanthropic and leadership-development layer to that approach.
The Zayed Education Foundation was established to empower more than 100,000 young people by 2035 through education, leadership, research and collaboration. Its programmes are intended to prepare young leaders to respond to complex challenges such as climate change, economic inequality and technological disruption, while remaining grounded in service and collective responsibility.
Her Highness Sheikha Mariam bint Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairperson of the Zayed Education Foundation, has described leadership through the foundation as rooted in identity, integrity, compassion and shared responsibility. That framing gives the partnership a values-led dimension, distinguishing it from conventional academic cooperation agreements focused mainly on funding or institutional exchange.
The agreement also comes as the foundation expands partnerships with UAE-based institutions. American University of Sharjah joined the Ruwwad Zayed network this month under a separate agreement covering scholarships, research clusters, endowed research chairs, postdoctoral fellowships, PhD grants, entrepreneurship, professional growth and community engagement. That move signalled the foundation’s intent to build a multi-university ecosystem rather than a stand-alone scholarship scheme.
