StubHub ticket failures anger World Cup fans

StubHub is facing a wave of anger from World Cup supporters after paid-for tickets failed to arrive, vanished from accounts or were cancelled close to kick-off, leaving families outside stadiums after spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on match-day plans.

The complaints have spread across host cities in the United States as the 2026 FIFA World Cup moves through its group-stage schedule, with buyers saying they relied on StubHub and other resale platforms because official allocations were unavailable, confusing or already priced beyond reach. Many discovered only on the day of the match, or shortly before it, that their purchases could not be transferred into FIFA’s official mobile ticketing system.

The dispute has exposed a fault line between football’s official ticketing controls and the secondary market that has grown around high-demand events. StubHub operates as a marketplace connecting buyers and sellers, rather than as the original ticket issuer. That model depends on sellers delivering valid tickets within the promised window. When that chain breaks, buyers may receive refunds or replacement offers, but travel, hotels, lost wages and the emotional cost of a missed World Cup match are usually outside the standard remedy.

Several fans said the cancellations came after months of confidence that their seats were secured. A family in Texas said their World Cup plan was upended hours before a match at Houston’s NRG Stadium. A New Jersey family who had bought four tickets as a holiday gift saw the order cancelled a day before a Philadelphia fixture before replacements were eventually arranged. Other buyers reported spending more than double their original outlay to salvage the day after being told their StubHub orders would not be fulfilled.

One widely cited case involved Bina Ramroop, who bought tickets for a Spain match involving Cape Verde in Atlanta and was unable to use them after the transfer process failed. Another involved fans who travelled across states only to find that the tickets they expected were not available. The details vary, but the pattern is similar: a completed purchase, a late-stage failure, long calls with customer service and a refund offer that did not restore the lost experience.

StubHub has maintained that many of the failures are tied to FIFA’s ticketing technology, transfer restrictions and the late rollout of World Cup app processes. The company says it is working to secure replacement tickets where possible and that its FanProtect guarantee is designed to provide buyers with comparable tickets or a refund when orders are not fulfilled. It has also said the problem tickets are not speculative listings.

FIFA’s position places the burden of certainty on official channels. Tickets bought directly through FIFA’s platform are the only ones guaranteed by the tournament organiser, and its closed mobile-ticketing system is designed to limit fraud, unauthorised transfers and mass touting. That approach, however, has collided with a resale culture in which fans often assume that a paid order on a major platform is as secure as a primary ticket.

Consumer advocates and ticketing specialists point to speculative selling as a possible factor in some failed orders. Under that practice, sellers list tickets they do not yet possess, hoping to acquire them later at a lower price and fulfil the order before the deadline. If prices rise or supply tightens, the seller may walk away, leaving the platform to refund the buyer or hunt for alternatives. Sellers can face penalties, but buyers often receive little beyond repayment of the ticket cost.

The episode has landed at a sensitive time for StubHub. Its UK arm was fined £889,200 and ordered to refund more than £590,000 to over 50,000 customers after regulators found that mandatory fees had not been shown clearly enough at the start of some transactions. StubHub said that case involved an isolated platform error and that affected customers would receive automatic refunds.
