Qatar Airways widens Philippine travel links

Qatar Airways and Philippine Airlines are broadening their codeshare and loyalty partnership, giving passengers wider access across the Gulf, Europe, Africa, Southeast Asia, Australasia and the United States from 1 June 2026.

The expanded arrangement will allow Philippine Airlines to place its PR code on Qatar Airways-operated flights from Manila, Cebu, Clark and Davao to Doha, opening onward connections through Hamad International Airport to more than 20 European cities, including Paris, Rome and Frankfurt. Qatar Airways will, in turn, place its QR code on Philippine Airlines domestic services, improving access for passengers arriving in Manila and Cebu to leisure destinations such as Caticlan, the gateway to Boracay, and Puerto Princesa in Palawan.

The move builds on a strategic partnership launched in June 2025, when the two carriers began daily non-stop Manila-Doha flights under a codeshare framework. The latest expansion deepens that arrangement from a single long-haul bridge into a broader network-sharing platform covering more than 40 destinations.

For Philippine Airlines, the agreement strengthens its Middle East presence without requiring a large immediate increase in long-haul capacity. The carrier gains a wider sales reach across Europe and Africa through Doha, while continuing to use its own hubs in Manila, Cebu, Clark and Davao to feed outbound traffic. For Qatar Airways, the partnership provides stronger access to the Philippine domestic market, including tourism routes that remain important to visiting friends and relatives traffic, leisure travellers and expatriate communities.

The loyalty component is a significant part of the expansion. Qatar Airways Privilege Club and Philippine Airlines Mabuhay Miles members can now collect and spend their loyalty currencies across both airlines’ networks. Privilege Club members will be able to earn and redeem Avios on Philippine Airlines flights across Southeast Asia, Australasia, the United States and domestic points in the Philippines. Mabuhay Miles members will gain access to Qatar Airways’ wider international network, including destinations across Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

The arrangement marks Privilege Club’s 26th airline partnership and further extends Qatar Airways’ frequent-flyer reach in Southeast Asia. Avios can be used for reward flights, upgrades, partner airline bookings, Qatar Airways Holidays packages, Qatar Duty Free purchases and selected lifestyle benefits. Mabuhay Miles members will continue to have access to travel, retail and dining redemption options through the Philippine carrier’s own partner ecosystem.

The timing reflects a wider push by full-service carriers to use partnerships, loyalty integration and selective codeshares to capture international demand without relying only on new aircraft deliveries. Supply constraints, aircraft delivery delays and high capital costs have encouraged airlines to use bilateral partnerships as a quicker way to extend market coverage. For passengers, such arrangements can simplify itineraries, baggage handling and booking options, though benefits depend on fare class, route availability and programme rules.

Doha’s role as a connecting hub remains central to the deal. Hamad International Airport has become a major transit point for Europe-Asia, Africa-Asia and Middle East traffic, helped by Qatar Airways’ extensive long-haul network. The airline is operating across more than 160 destinations worldwide during the summer schedule, while its hub continues to compete with other Gulf aviation centres for premium and transfer passengers.

Philippine Airlines, Asia’s oldest commercial airline, continues to rebuild and refine its network after years of restructuring, pandemic disruption and changing regional competition. Its domestic reach gives Qatar Airways access to cities and holiday markets beyond Manila, while the Philippine carrier gains a stronger proposition for passengers travelling to Europe and Africa via Doha rather than through other Asian or Gulf hubs.

Operational reliability is also being used as a selling point by both carriers. Qatar Airways was named the world’s best airline at the 2025 World Airline Awards and received top-tier recognition for operational performance. Philippine Airlines was recognised as Asia-Pacific’s most punctual airline for 2025, a useful distinction as codeshare customers often judge partnerships by connection dependability as much as route choice.
