G7 Urges Halt to Iran’s Overseas Repression

G7 foreign ministers publicly denounced Iran’s escalation of transnational repression, accusing its intelligence networks of orchestrating harassment, kidnappings, and assassination attempts against political opponents living abroad. The statement also warned that such actions undermine international norms and sovereign rights.

G7 members, through the Rapid Response Mechanism, cited multiple instances in which Iranian operatives allegedly followed or surveilled journalists, attached tracking devices to cars, carried out break-ins, and launched smear campaigns. Women journalists reportedly received threats, including death and sexual violence via social media and messaging platforms. The statement singled out efforts to intimidate family members of dissidents still in Iran.

The ministers also raised concerns about Iran’s targeting of Jewish communities abroad, publication of personal information of journalists, and other tactics described as malign—digital attacks, doxxing, impersonation, online abuse—all said to be part of a broader design to sow discord and control narratives beyond its borders.

Australia, one of the associate members of the G7 RRM, reaffirmed its defence of free speech and protection for those threatened by foreign government interference. It aligned itself with G7 criticism of Iran, emphasising Australia’s zero-tolerance approach to overseas intimidation and harassment carried out on its soil.

Experts say the pattern demonstrates a troubling shift. According to reports, Iranian government actors are no longer just monitoring critics; they are actively conducting operations across continents to silence, coerce or punish them. United Nations human rights experts have echoed alarm, pointing to escalating threats against media workers affiliated with Iran International among others.

The G7’s statement urges all states to respect sovereignty and refrain from conduct that violates diplomatic norms. It pledges that members will enhance cooperation to counter foreign interference, support victims, and strengthen accountability mechanisms.
