Galfar Secures Strategic Contract for Key Segment of Oman’s Longest Dual Carriageway

Galfar Engineering and Contracting Company has been awarded a significant contract valued at approximately OMR 118 million for the construction of Part Four of the Sultan Said bin Taimur Road dualisation project. This 135-kilometre section extends from the Wilayat of Maqshin to the Duka area and forms a crucial component of Oman’s ambitious infrastructure development plans aimed at enhancing connectivity between the northern and southern regions of the country.

The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology formalised the agreement with Galfar, in partnership with Saudi Arabia’s Al Omair Trading and Contracting Company. The project is scheduled for completion within a 36-month timeframe, with mobilisation and execution phases set to commence following the finalisation of contractual procedures.

The scope of work for this segment encompasses the construction of a new dual carriageway featuring two lanes in each direction, 14 ground-level bypass lanes, and a major overpass bridge. Additionally, the project includes the installation of 241 reinforced concrete box culverts and 95 pipe culverts to facilitate surface water drainage, as well as the provision of future utility ducts to accommodate broadband infrastructure. The development also entails the establishment of three rest areas, eight emergency openings in the central median, and 25 parking bays designated for the Royal Oman Police. Road rehabilitation works at wadi crossings and the implementation of comprehensive traffic safety measures are integral components of the project.

This contract is part of a broader initiative involving three agreements signed by the MTCIT to dualise a total of 400 kilometres of the Sultan Said bin Taimur Road, with a cumulative investment exceeding OMR 258 million. The overarching objective is to transform the route from Muscat to Dhofar Governorate into Oman’s longest dual carriageway, thereby significantly improving road safety, facilitating smoother traffic flow, and stimulating economic and social development along the corridor.

The dualisation project is aligned with Oman Vision 2040, which emphasises the enhancement of infrastructure to support economic diversification and regional development. By improving logistical connectivity across various governorates, the project is expected to reduce travel times, lower transportation costs, and promote tourism and trade activities. The upgraded road infrastructure will also provide better access to remote areas, fostering inclusive growth and integration within the national economy.

Galfar’s involvement in this high-profile project underscores its position as a leading player in Oman’s construction sector. The company’s robust project portfolio and strategic partnerships have enabled it to secure significant contracts, contributing to its record order book of OMR 890 million as of September 2024. This growth trajectory reflects Galfar’s capacity to deliver complex infrastructure projects and its commitment to supporting the Sultanate’s development objectives.
