Oman is embarking on a significant expansion of its renewable energy portfolio with the development of five new wind farms. This ambitious initiative, representing the largest push for wind power in the country's history, is expected to attract $1.2 billion in investments and bolster Oman's renewable energy capacity by an impressive 1 gigawatt (GW).
The initiative revolves around Independent Power Projects (IPPs), a financing model where private companies develop and operate power plants. This strategy aims to leverage private sector expertise and resources to accelerate Oman's transition towards a more sustainable energy mix.
The wind farms will be strategically located across the Sultanate, capitalizing on regions known for their strong and consistent winds. Mahout, in Al Wusta Governorate, will be home to the largest of the five projects. With a projected generation capacity ranging from 342 MW to 400 MW, this wind farm is expected to require an investment of approximately $187 million.
Duqm, another prominent location identified for wind power development, will see its initial plans for a 200 MW wind farm significantly scaled up. The revised project now boasts a targeted capacity between 234 MW and 270 MW, reflecting Oman's commitment to maximizing its wind energy potential.
While Ras Madrakah, previously envisioned as a potential site for a 100 MW wind farm, is not included in this current wave of IPPs, the overall emphasis on wind power development signifies a long-term strategic shift for Oman.
